Mathilde is a Hardanger yacht built in 1884 in Ølve, Hardanger, and is one of the most characteristic boat types for the region. Around the turn of the century (1900), there were approximately 2500 vessels of this type sailing along the coast of Norway. For Hardanger, the yachts were crucial as they formed the basis of income for the region through participation in the northern trade. The yachts sailed north to Lofoten and Finnmark, where they bought dried cod, which was then sold further in Bergen.
